Measurement of the Universal Gas Constant Using an Acoustic Resonator

چکیده
Competition is a great motivator. The 1988 measurement of the universal gas constant R at NIST [1] was stimulated by an error made at a rival national metrology institute, Great Britain’s National Physical Laboratory (NPL). In 1976, a group at NPL reported a “new” value for the universal gas constant R that had a standard uncertainty of 8.4 ppm (1 ppm = 1 part in 10). The “new” value was 159 ppm larger than the “older” 1972 value of R that had an uncertainty of 31 ppm (See Fig. 1.).

Measurement of the universal gas constant R using a spherical acoustic resonator.
R. S. Davis We report a new determination of the Universal Gas Constant R: (8.314471 ±0.OOOOI4)J.mol1K1• The uncertainty in the new value is 1.7 ppm (standard error), a factor of 5 smaller than the uncertainty in the best previous value. The gas constant was determined from measurements of the speed of sound in argon as a function of pressure at the temperature of the triple point of water. The...

Thermoacoustics describes energy conversion processes, activated by interaction temperature oscillation, accompanying the pressure oscillation in a sound wave, with solid boundaries. In ordinary experience this interaction of sound and heat cannot be observed, because of the very low temperature differences, but under suitable conditions, it can be emphasized and amplified to create remarkable ...
متن کاملOpto-acoustical filter based on phoxonic crystal ring resonator
In this paper, a phoxonic crystal structure is designed that shows a complete phononic and photonic ban gap and is capable to guide the optical waves with transverse magnetic polarization and acoustic waves. The materials used in the structure are nylon and molybdenum, which have suitable refractive index and elastic constant. Also, it is worth of noting that the filling factor is 28% for the p...
متن کاملEvaluation of Acoustic Emission Inspection of Oil Tank Floor via Tank Bottom Plates Thickness Measurement
This paper deals with an inspection of defects including corrosion and leakage by Acoustic Emission (AE) in an oil tank floor. In contrast to intrusive methods such as magnetic flux leakage, eddy current or ultrasonic, there is no need to emptying and entering the tank in AE method in order to inspection. In this research AE investigation and AE source location is presented in detail. The resul...

National Institute of Standards and Technology, Gaithersburg, MD 20899-0001 We measured the acoustic resonance frequencies of an argon-filled spherical cavity and the microwave resonance frequencies of the same cavity when evacuated. The microwave data were used to deduce the thermal expansion of the cavity and the acoustic data were fitted to a temperature-pressure surface to deduce zeropressu...
